In an effort to get our carbon footprint as low as possible, we teamed up with Fortis X and introduced plant-based and biodegradable water bottles to our trains, departures lounges and to our guesthouses. These plant-based water bottles are made entirely from sugarcane and 100% biodegradable into compost.

At Rovos Rail we understand that as a participant in the local and global hospitality industry we have a responsibility to go greener wherever we can. Our team is working tirelessly to find solutions to the remaining waste challenges we have and we are committed to being as earth-friendly as possible. We are the green train after all.

With @thegreattrainracesa drawing closer, we’d love to delve into the thrilling tale behind the legendary 1930s Bentley vs. Le Train Bleu race and share why we celebrate this historic event.

In 1930, Bentley racing driver Woolf Barnato made a daring bet that he could outpace the renowned Le Train Bleu to Calais in his Speed Six Bentley. At precisely 17:45 on March 13th, as the train departed from Cannes, Barnato and his companion roared into action.

Their journey was nothing short of extraordinary. Barnato's determination was so fierce that he aimed not only to beat the train to Calais but to reach London before Le Train Bleu even arrived in France.

After a gruelling drive, they crossed the English Channel on a packet steamer, tackled another 100 kilometres of relentless driving, and to a chorus of applause, Barnato triumphantly parked outside the Conservative Club on St James Street at exactly 13:20 – four minutes before Le Train Bleu pulled into Calais Station.

Join us as we commemorate this audacious feat on Saturday, 28 September 2024, at Heidelberg Airfield in Gauteng to celebrate the spirit of adventure and rivalry that defines The Great Train Race (Heidelberg)!

For Rovos Rail passengers, one of the highlights of their journey is a visit to the private station at Capital Park, Pretoria. This once-bustling hub of steam locomotion now serves as the headquarters for Rovos Rail. The property boasts an ever-expanding railway museum, locomotive sheds and more.

Should you wish to visit our museum or do a site tour, which will show you the nuts and bolts of the company, we suggest arriving two hours prior to departure.
