GOLF COURSE: Leopard Creek

Nestled like a hidden gem in the heart of Mpumalanga and the southern border of the Kruger National Park, Leopard Creek is 360-hectare golfer’s paradise. Flanked to the north and west by the famous Crocodile River, passengers aboard Rovos Rail’s African rail tour are welcomed by postcard-worthy views and a magnificent course ready to be conquered.

Scenic courses are an African speciality and Leopard Creek is no exception. Innovative architecture and imaginative landscaping techniques dot the resort and separate the sweeping golf course and lodge from the abundance of wildlife living in the region. Bushveld koppies typical to Africa overlook the course while bubbling brooks and small lakes divert through the development to create picturesque vistas and challenging golf strategies.

It’s at Leopard Creek that the term ‘golfing hazards’ take on a whole new definition. Much of the water snaking throughout the course is called home by the magnificent creatures from which the course river derives its name – crocodiles. In fact, passengers aboard Rovos Rail’s luxury train journey won’t be the first to experience sightings of crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and wild boar – sightings are commonplace either on the course itself or lounging next to the river which sweeps alongside several holes.

Leopard Creek’s 505-metre par-five 13th is regarded as one of the course’s most memorable holes. It is here that the sweeping green reaches right onto the banks of the Crocodile River at 32 metres above water-level. Golfers gracing this prestigious course laud the incredible views that extend up the river, entering the famous Kruger Park.

Unparalleled views meet world class facilities in the realm of Leopard Creek. The classically elegant clubhouse sits perched on the lush banks of the Crocodile River and features a lounge leading onto a sheltered patio. Here spectators can watch the play on the 9th and 18th greens or sip on an icy cocktail while searching for animals in the Kruger National Park.
